HRDS General Class Descriptions
Please Note that not all HRDS Classes are offered during the summer Sessions
Ballet (ages 3 & up) – The foundation of all dance forms. This course allows students to develop the fundamentals of dance through control, poise, precision, fluency and grace using the technique and style of classical ballet. Students will learn ballet vocabulary through barre and center work while building strength and flexibility. Students who are serious about improving as dancers will find that ballet classes are an important part of their training. (Out side of the combo classes this is a 45min class/week)

Mommy and Me (3 and under)- This is a great class to get your child and you exercising and having fun while spending much needed time together. That special time together is so important at this young age. This class covers some basic ballet as well as games, motor skills, balance, rhythm, and stretching. (this is a 45min class/week)
Ballet/Tap Combo (3-5)- This is a perfect class for the beginner dancer. With a half hour of tap and a half hour of ballet they get a strong beginning start to the two most basic genres of dance while learning class room etiquette, motor skills, balance, etc. (This is an hour class/week)

Contemporary Lyrical (adv levels only- age 14 & up) - This form of ballet emphasizes emotion through its choreography as well as telling a story through centering and alignment of the body, gravity and breath, fall and recovery, suspension, tension, extention and opposition of body lines. (This is a company class only)

Pointe (invite only) – An extension of ballet, this is a very level specific class, offered by invitation only. It requires solid, consistent and current ballet training coupled with strength in the legs and the core of a dancer’s body. It is important that dancers have correct core and ankle strenght for this class or damage can be done. (This is a 45min class/week and MUST be paired with a Ballet Tech)

Jazz (age 6 & up) –A course designed to introduce students to basic skills of jazz dance with emphasis on general body technique and development, rhythm awareness, jazz styles, and rhythmic combinations of movement. This is the form of dance that is most commonly seen and recognized. (This is a 30- 45min class/week and must be paired with a ballet)

Modern (adv levels only- age 16 & up)– This class emphasizes the use of the floor for centering and grounding oneself in movement. The choreography often includes creating an abstract idea into concrete form. This class focuses on the breath (inhale/exhale), which brings quality to one’s movement. Concepts of exploring the body’s capabilities and emotion to tell a story, contraction/release, musicality and rhythm are explored. (This is a 45 min class/week)

Ballet Tech (ages 10 and up)- Push yourself and your ballet technique further as you learn to appreciate the beauty of this art that is the basis for all dance. Ballet is necessary and leads to quicker and proper advancement in all genres of dance from hip hop to pointe. (this is a 45 min- 1hr class/week that should be paired with other classes- this is NOT a performance class)

Leaps N Turnes (Ages 7 and up)- Challenge yourself to leap higher, turn better, and balance longer as you learn proper techniques for the "tricks" in dance. Strength and flexibility training is also incorporated in this class. This class must be paired with Ballet as well as other dance classes. An Excellent choice for dance teamers! (This is a 45min- 1hr class/week)

Tap (ages 3 & up) – This course is upbeat, fun, and energetic. In its beginning levels it will teach children basic rhythms and sounds. As the child progresses, the class will challenge students to recognize beats and rhythms that are not always so specific. This must be paired with a ballet class. (This is a 30-45 min class/week)

Hip-Hop (age 5 & up) - A high-energy class that uses the latest sounds in rap, R&B and pop music together with movements influenced by some of today’s hottest video choreographers. Hip hop encompasses movement that has elements of poppin', locking, and breaking as well as freestyle movement to give students the opportunity to develop their own sense of style. Hip hop is urban, it’s street, and it’s diverse and forever changing. (This is a 30-45min class/week)

Pom (age 5-7yrs)- Beginning students will use poms to further help their motor skills by learning timing, angles and body control, they will also start to incorporate some jazz into their pomwork. Intermediate students will use more jazz skills and style in their pom work and will also work on becoming a sharper, more controlled dancer. (This is a 30min class/week)

Tumbling (age 3 & up)- This class concentrates on the acro skills that can be found in cheerleading, gymnastics and dance. Body strength, control and flexibility will improve as students learn to go head over heels! (This is a 45min class/week and does NOT perform in the end of the year recital)

Adult Intermediate/Advanced Jazz-This class is great for the college student or the experienced adult dancer. The class will include technique, stretching and strengthening, combinations across the floor and dance combinations.

Ballroom - From the foxtrot to the cha-cha and the rumba to the hustle, this class will introduce you to the many styles and characters of ballroom dance fused with jazz. Learn the basics of latin hip movement in rhythm dances as well as the posture and frame of the smooth dances. Open to beginners, individuals and couples. To fit the adult busy schedule we structure all ballroom classes specifically for the dancer through private and Semi private lessons only.

Zumba (ages 18 & up)- A high energy dance fitness class for adults inspired by latin dance and empowered with a hip hop spirit. Its the latest craze in fitness for its whole body work out jammed packed with loads of fun for all. No dance experience is required!

Spirit Rhythm (age 7 and up plus 3 years of dance training)- A new performance team to HRDS. This program will help improve your performance level by participating in technical classes and various performances in parades and festivals throughout the summer and early fall (june-oct). Ballet tech and spirit practice is included in this program
Company Rhythm (for adv/serious dancers ages 10 and up) - A new advanced performance team for HRDS. This program will help improve your performance level by participating in technical classes, and many performances in festivals, competitions, professional and non professional sporting events, etc throughout the entire season. Company Rhythm will be featured in all recitals and are invited to be a part of the opening number. Note: this is equivalent to the previous 400 level program (ballet tech, leaps and turns, Jazz, Contemporary Lyrical, and a production number are included in this program)
